Cemetery Overview
The Fort Missoula post cemetery is part of the Fort Missoula Historic District which sits in the beautiful and open sky Missoula County. It's currently the oldest active cemetery in Missoula, MT. The cemetery was originally part of Fort Missoula which was established by the U.S. Army in 1877 in order to guard the Bitterroot Valley in what was then the Montana Territory. The post was utilized as an active U.S. Army installation until 1999 when it was eventually closed. At that time the cemetery was handed over to the care and control of the 88th Regional Support Command. It operates today as an active cemetery with many visitors and events with ties to the local community.
