Cemetery Overview

The Camp Lewis Post Cemetery can be found within the grounds of the U.S. Army's Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) which is located in the great state of Washington. JBLM, originally named Camp Lewis, and later changed to Fort Lewis, was originally built in 1917. The cemetery was established not long after with the first interment occurring there in 1918. At the center of the cemetery, a circle has been named in honor of the Fort Lewis founder, David Lamme Stone, a captain of the Engineer Corps. Stone returned to then Fort Lewis in 1936 as a brigadier general, and then major general, to command the installation he was so instrumental in building. In the center of the circle are two markers, one placed in honor of all unknown American soldiers who gave their lives for their country; the second marker pays homage to Stone-the Father of Fort Lewis. Every Memorial Day, JBLM Soldiers and community members clean and decorate the headstones with flags.

Because the Camp Lewis Post Cemetery resides on an active U.S. Army installation, Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), all non-DoD, non-federally-affiliated visitors without proper government identification should call ahead for information on how to properly obtain gate access before departing. Visitors can receive assistance from the JBLM Visitors Center located at 5901 41st Division Dr, JBLM, WA 98433 or by calling 253- 967-4794. The JBLM Visitors Center is open from 5 am to 10 pm daily. Visitors can also call the JBLM Cemetery Responsible Official to inquire about cemetery access. A search of interment will be conducted to verify the interment of the individual within Camp Lewis’s Post Cemetery. Upon positive verification of interment, the requesting party will be granted access after all individuals and their vehicles are cleared through the Provost Marshall. The cemetery resides back off of 2nd Division Range Road near the Skeet Trap Range. The cemetery is open to the public during daylight hours. There are regularly no staff members present at the cemetery. There is limited parking and the cemetery is wheelchair-accessible. A map of the cemetery grounds and floral regulations are posted near the entrance of the cemetery.
